What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in removing waste, toxins, and excess fluids from the body. It involves gentle, rhythmic movements performed by trained therapists to promote lymphatic circulation.

Where did Manual Lymph Drainage originate from?

MLD was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid in France. Originally designed to treat chronic sinusitis and other immune-related conditions, MLD has since been adapted for various medical and cosmetic applications.

How can MLD benefit women undergoing cosmetic surgeries?

MLD can aid in the recovery process before and after cosmetic surgeries by:

  • Reducing post-operative swelling and bruising.
  • Enhancing the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
  • Accelerating the removal of excess fluids and toxins.
  • Alleviating discomfort and pain.
  • Promoting scar tissue softening and mobility.

When should MLD be initiated before surgery?

Pre-operative MLD sessions can begin a few weeks before surgery to prepare the lymphatic system and optimize its function for a smoother post-operative recovery. If doing the minimum, try to have a MLD session at least 2 days before your surgery. Consult with your surgeon or a certified MLD therapist for the ideal timing.

How soon after surgery can I start post-operative MLD?

Post-operative MLD typically begins within the first few days after surgery, once your surgeon approves and incisions have sufficiently healed. The exact timing will depend on the procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations.

How many MLD sessions are needed for effective recovery?

The number of MLD sessions required varies based on the surgery and individual factors. In many cases, a series of sessions over several weeks is recommended, with more frequent sessions immediately after surgery.

Is MLD painful after surgery?

MLD is generally gentle and should not be painful. Therapists use light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate lymphatic flow without causing discomfort. If you experience pain during MLD, inform your therapist immediately.

Are there any potential risks or contraindications for MLD?

While MLD is generally safe, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, active infections, or acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Always consult with your surgeon and a qualified MLD therapist to ensure it’s appropriate for your specific situation.

How long will it take to see the benefits of MLD in my post-operative recovery?

The benefits of MLD, such as reduced swelling and improved comfort, can be noticeable within the first few sessions. However, the full results may take several weeks as the body continues to heal and regenerate.

Is MLD suitable for non-invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox or dermal fillers?

MLD may not be necessary for non-invasive procedures, but it can still help reduce swelling and enhance results if incorporated into your post-procedure skincare routine.

Can MLD help with post-operative pain management?

Yes, MLD can aid in pain management by reducing swelling and promoting better circulation. However, it should be used in conjunction with any pain medications prescribed by your surgeon.

Can MLD help prevent complications like seromas or hematomas after surgery?

While MLD can promote healthy lymphatic flow and reduce fluid buildup, it’s not a guarantee against complications. It should be used as a complementary therapy alongside your surgeon’s post-operative instructions.

Are there any dietary or lifestyle recommendations to enhance the benefits of MLD?

Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients can support the lymphatic system and complement the effects of MLD.

Are there any alternatives to MLD?

There are alternative treatments that can be used to reduce swelling and promote healing after a cosmetic procedure, including compression garments and ice packs. However, MLD is considered to be one of the most effective and non-invasive treatments available. For best results, make use of compression garments in conjunction with regular Manual Lymph Drainage massages.

Can MLD help with the appearance of scars after breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift surgery?

MLD may help soften scar tissue and improve the appearance of scars over time. However, always follow your surgeon’s scar care instructions for the best results.

Can MLD help with post-operative emotional well-being and stress reduction?

Yes, MLD’s relaxation benefits can contribute to reduced stress and improved emotional well-being during the recovery process.

How soon in advance should I book my Manual Lymph Drainage sessions?

Our Manual Lymph Drainage Specialist is very often booked weeks & months in advance by both local & international clients who travel to Cape Town for cosmetic surgery, using the city as a base for their recovery period. It is advisable to book your Pre & Post-Op Massages as soon as you have booked your surgery. We suggest starting with a minimum of 4, 6 or 8 treatments to begin with and then assessing the need for further treatments halfway through your course of treatments.

How long are MLD treatments?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, systematic & detailed medical massage that requires slow, rhythmic motions over the entire lymphatic system. While the duration of treatment differs from therapist to therapist, with some doing sessions as short as 60 minutes and others going up to 90 minutes, our treatments are generally a minimum of 2 hours in duration. There are of course instances when the duration may be shortened to 90 minutes depending on the type of surgery a client has undergone and her pain levels at that moment in time.

Where are these MLD treatments done?

We understand that you will be in pain & discomfort after your surgery so we don’t expect you to travel anywhere to receive the healing care you need. Our Manual Lymph Drainage Specialist, The Massage Guy – Cape Town, will travel out to you so that you get to enjoy your MLD treatments in the comfort & convenience of your home or hotel.
